Welcome to Second Grade!
The new second grade class has settled in and is looking forward to an exciting year. We will be spending much of the year preparing for First Reconciliation and First Communion. First Reconciliation will be held on a Saturday morning in early February. First Communion will be on the weekend of April 28-29. More information will be sent home as these dates approach. The class is eager to learn cursive writing, adding and subtracting larger numbers, and becoming better readers.
Our first unit in Religion will focus on God as the giver of life and love. We will be reviewing the prayers we already know and learning the Act of Contrition. Much of our time will be spent reflecting on our choices and how they affect others. We will work on being kind to everyone.
Second Grade is excited to meet up with the Superkids again. They are now in second grade too! We will be reviewing and learning many new phonics skills that will help us decode longer and harder words. Our program also has informational magazines filled with lots of interesting science, art, and social studies topics. We be reading a new magazine every month. New this year is the Superkids Book Club which has many story and chapter books for us to read together. We will read one book each month. The Superkids program incorporates writing and grammar skills, so our writing projects will be connected to the stories we are reading. Daily reading at home is encouraged. Please make time in your after school schedules for 10-20 minutes of reading.
Our first chapter in Math will help us learn about our number system. We will be learning about place value, different ways to write and show numbers, and how to compare them. We will also be reviewing and learning addition facts with sums to 20. Five minutes of daily practice will be beneficial in helping your child commit them to memory. They must know all the addition and subtraction facts before starting 3rd grade. Reflex Math is a great resource. You may access this program through the school website. Xtra Math is a great and free site for math fact practice that students enjoy. Both of these can be accessed on a computer or tablet.
Our English lessons will focus on the four types of sentences, captitals, and ending punctuation. We will be learning about story and paragraph structure by focusing on sequence and good leads and closings. We will be writing personal narratives during our first unit work, as well as many short pieces of writing, such as opinions, summaries, predictions, and connections to stories.
We are excited to begin studying geology in Science class. The students are very interested in the earth and rocks and the many other amazing things that God has placed on our planet for us to enjoy. Our Social Studies unit will discuss the types of communities we live in.
Social Studies will begin with a review of map skills and then move into the different kinds of communities in which we live.
As you can see, we have many new and interesting things to learn this year. We will be busy! Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions or concerns.
God's blessings,
Ms. Benz
